Acclamation
When your animal comes home, let them get used to their environment. This usually takes 2 weeks, but can take longer. During this time, do not handle them.
Desensitizing
Most reptiles have a fear of hands coming towards them, as it mimics a predator. To prepare for handling, they need to get used to your hands.
This can be done by placing your hand in the enclosure and staying still. Let them explore and learn that your hand is not a threat.
Hand feeding
Food is a great way to bond with your animal. Hand feeding can be you holding food in your hand or placing food near the animal.
Handling
Handling can be rewarding for both person and animal. However, too much handling can become stressful and become a negative experience for your reptile.
Watch your animal for signs of stress to ensure you don't over-handle.
To start handling, offer your hand to climb on. You could also scoop them up from underneath, but we suggest offering them to climb on as this creates a better bond.
To reward your animal, place some food in the enclosure after handling to make it an even more rewarding experience for your reptile.
